Pet Name Tags

Why Are Pet Name Tags Important & What Should They include?

Does my dog need to have a collar/tag?

Yes! As well as being compulsory for owners to have their dogs microchipped it is also a legal requirement for dogs to wear a collar/tag that displays their contact information. It should be noted that owners can be fined up to £5000 if they don’t comply!

Why?

Tags are used to identify your pet quickly and efficiently making it a lot easier to know where a pet belongs if it goes missing.

What should my tag include?

A collar tag must display – Name of the owner (Initial and Surname) and an up-to-date address of the owner including house number and postcode.
It is not a requirement to include a contact number but is highly recommended in case your dog gets lost.

What shouldn’t my tag include?

A common mistake many pet owners make is adding their pet’s name to the tag. This puts them at risk of theft! Calling a pet’s name will likely entice a response from the pet, if a thief is attempting to sell a stolen pet, knowing their name is a quick way to bolster trust and seem legitimate to potential buyers.

Optional info

You can include optional information on the tag such as – microchip number, medical information, or a small message like ‘if found please…’

How To Ensure A Pet Name Tag Remains On Your Pet

Collar Safety Tips

The ID tags won’t matter unless they’re securely attached to your pet. To keep your pet comfortable a general rule to go by when wearing a collar is that two fingers should slide easily beneath it. Fit it snugly around the dogs neck but don’t pull it too tightly. Anytime your phone number or address changes you will need new tags.

We all want our dogs to stay safe, ID tags play a important role in bringing our dogs home safely. Just like we carry identification with us, our pets deserve the same safe guard.
